Cordell studied the bathroom one last time. Then he quickly lowered the toilet seat; he’d once heard a married woman with boys complain about men in the bathroom. Cordell did not want Jillian to hurt any part of herself because of him.

Jillian, his bride of two days, wouldn’t leave the computer. Her fingers whizzed over the keys when he wanted them lingering over him. Cordell ripped a notepad from his jeans and slashed out a note to purchase equipment for a home office. He knew that women kept recipes, record collections, household inventories and genealogy records on computers.

With Nanna camping in her tent in the backyard, he’d have Jillian to himself on their second day of marriage. Separate bedrooms weren’t on his menu of life. A trucker had delivered their packed boxes from New York. Cordell worried that Jillian might make herself at home alone in one bedroom—so he had hurried to place her clothing in the closet next to his, her bath powder and toothbrush near his. He thought her feminine little bottles looked sweet sitting next to his after-shave.

He rubbed his back. Scrubbing and waxing floors was not fun. He frowned and noted the roughness on his hands, created by cleaning the two bathrooms, and quickly rubbed Jillian’s hand cream into his skin. He lingered over the scent and thought how cute she was there in his studio, looking all curvy in his creations, with her baseball cap on backward, punching buttons. While she was visiting with Amanda, he’d taken a backup of his computer system, so that she wouldn’t lose Nanna Bear’s records.

He smelled the pot roast cooking in the kitchen, and quickly lifted the towel he’d been dusting with and fanned it, pushing the scents into the living room. He fluffed the pillows on his couch and frowned, standing back to survey his house. It was clean, but barren, offering little comfort. Except his hunting rifles, neatly oiled and in their rack. And his stuffed Canada goose, the champion set of deer antlers, and the trophy trout.

Cordell tilted his head to listen to Jillian rev the all-terrain vehicle’s motor as she came down the hill from the plant. His bride, coming to him… Cordell kicked one of his socks beneath the sofa and ripped Nanna’s huge apron from him. He balled it and stuffed it behind his gun rack. He glanced at the table, set for two, with candies ready. He hurried to light them and turn down the pot roast. The bakery cake and the wine were on the counter for after dinner. He’d never realized how much time it took to shop for and unload groceries.

Cordell tapped his fingers on the kitchen counter, surveying his handiwork, then glanced at the closed bedroom door. He swiftly opened it and turned down the bed’s sheets—an invitation to slide into them. He puffed the pillows and artistically arranged the nightgown he’d made for Jillian. He’d placed a wrapped mint on the pillow, just as he’d seen done in hotels.
